The Wekiva High School Women’s Lacrosse team experienced their first win on Thursday as they traveled to All Saints Academy in Winter Haven. The girls are 1-1 on the season. This match-up was a reunion of sorts as All Saints ended the Wekiva season in 2010 with a one goal difference.

This night was looking as though All Saints had an edge as they used skill and determination to break through the young defense of the Wekiva squad. Going into the half, Wekiva was behind by 3 goals and as the 2nd half was well underway, Wekiva soon found themselves behind by 5. Wekiva began a recharge and came within two goals with less than 1 minute remaining in the game. The girls were in the huddle during the last minute timeout and chanted “fight”. Junior Natalie Smith walked in all alone to make the score 10-11 with only 24 seconds left. Junior Kayla Carpenter beat her opponent to the lacrosse ball after the next draw and was on her way to the opposition’s goal when she dropped the ball with less than 7 seconds remaining - 10 yards from the goal. She out maneuvered three opponents to recover the dropped ball and charged in to the net area and made a shot on goal - just as the horn was buzzing. The goal went past the goalie but the refs were not convinced that it had made it in time - nor were they convinced that it didn’t. So - the refs agreed to allow overtime! This was the push the girls needed. As soon as overtime started, Wekiva scored two goals within 54 seconds and continued to dominate in the 6 minute overtime to beat All Saints 15-11.
